It doesn’t necessarily follow that simple, everyday products are simple to design.  The tape measure is a fundamental tool for home hobbyists, bricklayers and industrial users alike.  These diverse user groups have their own specific characteristics and requirements.

Ergonomists at Davis Associates were brought in to help design a product range that would meet those user requirements.  They observed not just the interaction of people with the tape measure, but also the context in which it was used.

By collecting anthropometric data on the size and shape of the users’ hands, as well as measuring their compressive finger strength, they were able to work with Frazer Designers to develop a range of user testing prototypes that would ultimately influence the design of the final concept.

It became clear that the best improvements in usability would be achieved if people could use the tape measure with one hand.

The prototype solutions were tested with different groups of users, and these were developed into a final product range with options suited to a number of specific tasks – each offering successful one-handed operation.
